Sweco awarded with the contract on bio-fuelled CHP plant project in Rovaniemi
10/19/2011
Sweco’s industry consultants have received a major order from a joint venture of Rovaniemi Energy and Oulu Energy power generation companies. Sweco assumes overall responsibility for engineering and project management of the power plant using mainly biomass and peat as fuel. The contract’s value is approximately EUR 5 million and the work is started immediately.
“This is a remarkable project for Rovaniemi and for whole of the economy in Lapland area, while the power production and logging generate new jobs. For Sweco, this contract is very important, due to the fact that the high volume power generation on biofuel represents the latest technology. The CHP plant can operate very flexibly in the energy market, while it generates either district heat, electricity or both and it can also use any kind of wood-based fuels or peat” says Tapani Bastman, Vice president of Sweco Industry.
“’Within few branches it is possible to look over the cycles of economy and make a considerable investment exactly when such a boost on employment is sought after. Thanks to the effective power generation process, the Mustikkamaa CHP plant will replace some of increased oil demand in district heating and produce electric power to the partners, Rovaniemi Energy and Oulu Energy. The power plant enables the usage of local renewable energy resources and can be regarded as a nationally significant investment when it comes to adding the use of renewable energy sources”, comments managing director Markus Tykkyläinen of Rovaniemi Energy.
The new CHP power plant in Rovaniemi has the maximum capacity of 120 MW district heat or in full electricity production, 90 MW of electricity. The boiler is 225 MW reheated CFB boiler representing the latest combustion technology. Sweco's assignment covers project management, engineering, procurement and delivery supervision. The work will be mainly executed by Sweco’s local offices in Finland. Duration of the project is three years, corresponding to 60 man-years.
