Environmentally sustainable success story in Kärkölä, Finland
Enriching project #28 369 of 31 000. Koskisen Oy wanted to utilize wood based waste as bio fuel in a sustainable and eco-efficient way. Bio fuel comes as a side product from Kärkölä plywood and chipboard mill and from sawmill. Sweco was chosen to design a power plant next to the plywood mill. Power plant produces bio energy from wood based waste.
Sweco provided all services for execution of the power plant project. The scope of services included everything from design and engineering services to commissioning services. Project’s main idea was power plant to burn only bark, sawdust and plywood wastes from the local mill.
From the environmental point of view this project is a success story. Sawmill waste is a bio fuel, and when it is utilized in power production, the load from plywood mill to the landfill site is significantly reduced. Power plant emissions are minimized by efficient flue gas cleaning. Heat recovery has been maximised, and heat production from local bio fuels has increased in the 2000's from 74 up to 95 percents.
