Sweco helped to increase production

Enriching project #820 of 31 000. Yara Suomi had a need to increase apatite concentrate production largely. Along with the increased production capacity was a new apatite concentrate drying plant built to Siilinjärvi, Finland and a new logistic unit built to Uusikaupunki, Finland. Sweco provided project management and project execution services for the both units. At the same time unfavourable environmental effects of the process were minimized.

Yaran’s open mine in Siilinjärvi, Finland is the largest in the Europe. Aim of the project was to increase apatite concentrate production capacity and to build a new drying plant to Siilinjärvi and improve rail transport logistics to Uusikaupunki, Finland.

The main partner in the project was Sweco who’s co-operation with Yara has been long-standing and fruitful. Sweco’s engineers had an extensive experience in mineral- and mining industry. They also offer a broad range of engineering and project services. Sweco was responsible for preliminary, basic and detail engineering of the apatite drying plant and the logistic units.

Additional value to project was gained from Sweco’s environmental experience. The use of heavy oil in drying plant was minimized by using waste heat from nearby sulphuric acid plant. Modern filtering technology is used to filter dust residues from exhaust air flows to very low level both in Siilinjärvi and in Uusikaupunki.
