Smart energy systems
The changes in the energy sector and digitalisation are making our energy systems smarter. New technologies and automation systems, utilised increasingly effectively, are becoming more and more common in buildings, industry and transport. However, bold collaboration between different sectors is required. The aim is to utilise and recycle energy locally as efficiently as possible. We help clients design, develop and create smart energy systems and optimise their operation during use.
Smart energy networks for industry, buildings and transport
A low-carbon society needs new types of local energy solutions for its heat and electricity generation. A power grid is controlled through a digital system and interfaces, which can be used to share building data transparently and in real time in cloud, for example. We design smart energy systems for companies, industrial parks and residential blocks. Local energy solutions also include sustainable transport modes, such as electric cars and electric bikes.
Local energy systems facilitate demand-side management
Increasing our energy consumption efficiency requires energy to be locally recycled. Local energy systems facilitate demand-side management, in which renewable energy is consumed at as optimal times as possible. This reduces the number of consumption peaks and the need for fossil fuels. We provide support with planning local energy systems, from zoning to energy efficiency assessments and strategies. We also use remote control means and analytics services to further develop these systems’ operation during their use.
Hydrogen economy and Power-to-X solutions
The biggest challenge when it comes to renewable energy is the fluctuation in its production. Hydrogen economy offers an effective solution to this. Industrial-scale Power-to-X technologies balance out the generation of solar and wind power, which cannot be regulated similarly to traditional energy generation. With Power-to-X technologies, electricity is transformed into hydrogen, which can be utilised directly by industry or for electricity and heat production. Hydrogen can also be further refined into ammonia and synthetic fuels. We provide support to our customers from start to finish.
Energy cooperation across sectors
Smart energy systems are always based on a community. Energy-efficient utilisation requires that industry, municipalities, power companies and property owners work together in new ways (sector integration). We help our customers bring the right people to the table and support decision-making with new tools, such as virtual power plants and digital twins. These visualise information into a form that is easy to absorb, which helps operators work openly together.
Energy storage solutions and batteries
We are in the process of developing and implementing new heat energy storage technologies for our customers. Several cost-effective solutions already exist for storing energy, including district heating and cooling batteries, compressed-air energy storages and geothermal batteries. Their greatest advantages include their ability to store energy in the summer and whenever electricity is cheap, and supply energy when the price is high.
Hybrid energy systems
In addition to property-specific solutions, hybrid energy systems can be used in conjunction with local solutions. A Finnish-language article describes a local energy network created for Aalto University, which will have low-temperature energy networks for heating and cooling, ideally suited for energy generation with various types of heat pumps.
