A transition to sustainable energy systems is underway across the globe. Sweco’s energy experts work across the entire energy supply chain. Focus is on how energy is produced, distributed where it’s needed, and consumed as efficiently as possible. The result is a reliable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable energy supply.
Today, one of the biggest challenges of energy production is to take care of the fuel resources, their sufficiency and sustainable utilisation. To be able to rise to the challenge of fulfilling the energy needs in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, we must be able to produce more energy from renewable energy sources.
Sweco’s specialists are working constantly with sustainable forms of energy production in an attempt to provide energy production possibilities for future generations.
Our assignments of renewable energy include various biomass-based energy production projects, such as energy production plants or refining biomass into fuel through gasification and further refining it into transport fuel. Biofuel is also used as raw material in biofuel pellet plants.
One environmentally sustainable way of producing energy is to utilise combustible materials classified as waste as a fuel in traditional bulk combustion plants or in gasification plants, producing gas that can be utilised for energy production. Landfill site gases can also be utilised. Sweco’s experts have designed waste utilisation plants using all the well-known technologies. This experience helps us mitigate the growth of landfill sites.
The raw material costs of renewable energy are lowest for wind, solar and hydropower. We have participated in various wind power project assessments and undertaken demanding engineering assignments for wind turbine manufacturers. Water power resources in Finland have been utilised quite extensively, but Sweco takes part in the planning of maintenance and upgrades of existing power plants which will guarantee the usability of these power plants well into the future.
