The bioproduct factory in Äänekoski – A national spearhead project

The new Metsä Fibre bioproduct factory is the largest individual industrial investment in the history of the Finnish forest industry. It is regionally significant to Central Finland in terms of industrial jobs, wood procurement and investments in infrastructure and logistics. Sweco has acted as the primary designer from the early phases of the project all the way to implementation.

Planning for the new plant producing pine and birch pulp as part of Metsä Fibre’s overall strategy was started several years ago.

We carried out the confidential preliminary evaluation phase in 2013. Metsä Fibre published the investment project in April 2014, after which the preliminary planning work at Sweco could begin. The final report for the investment programme was completed in December 2015. We also participated in the assessment of the environmental effects of the project in 2014.

The project implementation started in 2015. The first statements of intent with Andritz, Valmet and ABB were published in February 2015 and in March 2015 with Sweco.

Metsä Fibre is in charge of the overall project management and site services together with Andritz and Valmet as a so-called Open Book procedure.

Sweco provides the project with comprehensive project management and design services. We are in charge of all of the 3D modelling for the project and the electrification and automation design systems.

Our project services include scheduling, progress monitoring and reporting, purchasing services and design coordination. Our implementation planning includes process, plant and structural planning for both BOP (Balance of plant) and primary equipment supply.

"Sweco acting as the primary consultant for the project is an excellent continuation of the Metsä Fibre cooperation that started already in the preliminary planning phase. Our work from design to implementation are a step towards the commissioning of the bioproduct factory on schedule in the fall of 2017. "
