The national electric transmission grid of Finland is a vital part of our country’s energy system<\/a>, facilitating the efficient and reliable transfer of electricity from producers to consumers. In the future, the transmission grid will face several challenges that require careful preparation. These challenges include growing electricity consumption, integration of renewable energy sources, and upgrading aging infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Growth in electricity consumption and renewable energy sources<\/h2>\n

In Finland, electricity consumption is continuously increasing and is predicted to quintuple by 2040. Data centers<\/a> are major consumers of electricity, and their number and size are continually growing as well as hydrogen production<\/a> via electrolysis, which demands large amounts of electricity. This leads to a significant increase in electricity consumption, meaning the transmission grid must be expanded and strengthened to meet growing demand. The integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind<\/a> and solar energy<\/a>, into the transmission grid poses its own challenges. These energy sources are inherently variable, and their production is not as predictable as traditional energy sources. Therefore, the transmission grid must be flexible and capable of responding to rapid changes in production and consumption.<\/p>\n

Challenges in transmission grid design resources<\/h2>\n

Expanding and updating the transmission grid requires significant design resources, and more pole designers are needed in Finland. Poles are critical components of the transmission grid, supporting power lines and ensuring their safety and functionality. Pole design requires specialized expertise and experience, which we can provide at Sweco.<\/p>\n

From a designer’s perspective, pole design is a complex process that requires a deep understanding of structural mechanics, materials, and environmental factors. The designer must consider many aspects, such as wind loads, ice loads, and soil properties, to ensure that poles can withstand Finland’s varying weather conditions. Pole design also requires ongoing collaboration with various stakeholders, such as construction contractors and authorities, to ensure smooth project progress.<\/p>\n
