Finnkino Itis was finished on schedule \u2013 the project succeeded thanks to top-level skills and excellent team spirit<\/h1>\n

The new Finnkino Itis cinema opened to the public 30 November, as agreed. Wereldhave Finland, the owner of the Itis shopping centre at the time of the renovations, and Finnkino, the user of the cinema facilities, were impressed with the HVAC design, project management, BIM coordination and gorgeous indoor and facade lighting design presented by Sweco\u2019s experienced team.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fitting a cinema into the old facilities of the Anttila general store was no mean feat. During the extensive demolition work, the project team had to both maintain the conditions in the facilities of the other leaseholders in the shopping centre and take care not to disturb the shopping experience of tens of thousands of customers.\u201cWe\u2019ve implemented several cinema centres, but we\u2019ve rarely had to demolish parts of an existing shopping centre as extensively as we did in Itis,\u201d says\u00a0Anssi M\u00e4ntynen<\/strong>, Sweco\u2019s structure designer and project manager. \u201cWe managed to maintain the customer flow throughout the project by managing all activities at the construction site carefully.\u201dDemolition solutions needed to be worked out case by case<\/strong><\/p>\n

Creative temporary solutions were used to ensure good conditions, such as sufficient ventilation, in the conserved spaces. Fitting the old and new structures and technology together required the designers to possess sufficient knowledge \u2013 and a clear vision, above all.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire project was so complex that any standard solutions were not feasible,\u201d M\u00e4ntynen says. Managing tolerances and joining points was particularly challenging and required the designers to develop and customise the suitable details case-by-case. The extensive experience that M\u00e4ntynen and the other Sweco designers have of the various stages and alterations of Itis was essential in the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been involved with Itis practically throughout my career, so I know the building well, and Sweco has gained the client\u2019s trust. It feels good that we were able to be worth that trust, once again,\u201d M\u00e4ntynen states.<\/p>\n

Finnkino Itis will offer new and wonderful features to cinephiles<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finnkino is pleased with the skills and cooperation of the designers, including regular user design meetings where topical matters were discussed face-to-face.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe experience of the designers was very helpful and also made communication easier,\u201d says\u00a0Janne Uusi-K\u00f6lli<\/strong>, Finnkino\u2019s Development Director. Finnkino\u2019s business needs changed during the project, which also required the designs to change. \u201cFrom our perspective, the changes were mostly a \u2018lucky problem\u2019 since the matters that arose during the design process are now supporting our operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new cinema includes Finland\u2019s first IMAX cinema, the new Oscar\u2019s bar, two Luxe Premium auditoriums and six additional auditoriums.<\/p>\n

\u201dWe\u2019ve introduced many new features to the customers of Finnkino Itis, and we have also been able to complement our cinema network in the Helsinki metropolitan area,\u201d Uusi-K\u00f6lli says. The new Finnkino cinema has been extremely well-received, and customer feedback has been positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe layout of the cinema is clear, and the facilities fit well into the existing shopping centre. On the opening day, Finnkino offered great special bargains, as usual, and people were queuing up to the It\u00e4v\u00e4yl\u00e4 street. The sales were excellent throughout December,\u201d Uusi-K\u00f6lli says, delighted.<\/p>\n

Good team spirit is the basis of a successful project<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cooperation between the owner of the shopping centre, Finnkino, contractors and designers worked smoothly, and everyone aimed to fulfil the client\u2019s most important wishes together. The quality requirements were met, as was the schedule. All official inspections were done on time, and the location was handed over to the client according to plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough this was a demanding renovation project, we were able to adhere to the schedule, and the technical results were successful. The team spirit at the worksite was also excellent from start to finish,\u201d M\u00e4ntynen says, happy about the outcome.<\/p>\n

The schedules and workload were actively monitored during the project using systems such as \u201ctraffic lights,\u201d where the colours indicated which matters should be dealt with first.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the traffic lights, we made sure that no stage would be drawn out for too long. Any problems were actively tackled in the order of importance, and all parties were constantly aware of how the work was progressing,\u201d M\u00e4ntynen says. \u201cWhile the management of the worksite and the design was an important factor in our success, the most essential factor was skilled professionals.
