The second stage of Tampere Tramway, from Santalahti to Lent\u00e4v\u00e4nniemi, received a building permit<\/h1>\n

The Tramway Alliance in charge of constructing Tampere Tramway will start building Stage 2B of the tramway from Santalahti to Lent\u00e4v\u00e4nniemi in spring 2022, now that the artificial island planned along the route has received a building permit.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Administrative Court recently decided to overrule the appeal made against the decision of Tampere City Council and grant a building permit to the tramway section. The appeal concerned building on water, referring to the N\u00e4sisaari artificial island, which is planned to be built in front of the Hiedanranta shore area. N\u00e4sisaari will be a new residential area close to water and with easy access to the tramway.<\/p>\n

Tampere Tramway will be built by the Tramway Alliance in two stages. The first stage, covering the eastern side of the city, was completed in August 2021. Stage 2A of the tramway has been built in the western parts of the city, from Pyynikintori to Santalahti, and trams will begin operating in this section in 2023. The Alliance has been waiting to start the construction of Stage 2B, between Santalahti and Lent\u00e4v\u00e4nniemi, while waiting for the appeal period to end for the artificial island to be built on the route and for the decision to enter legal force.<\/p>\n

When Tampere Tramway is completed in full in 2024, it will cover 24 kilometres and is expected to carry 55,000 passengers daily, which equals 40% of the public transport volume of the entire region. The tramway plays a key role in the City of Tampere\u2019s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030.<\/p>\n

Sweco is a part of the Tramway Alliance with the City of Tampere, AFRY, NRC Group and YIT, participating in both stages of the project as the planner of the tramway, street areas, geotechnology, engineering structures, traffic planning, risk management, track cables and technical systems. The value of Sweco\u2019s planning work is about 5 million euro for the second stage. The project employs about 50 people from Sweco.<\/p>\n
