Sweco\u2019s multidisciplinary role in St1\u2019s LBG filling stations<\/span><\/h2>\n

Energy company St1 is expanding the distribution network of liquefied biomethane (LBG) in Finland and aims to establish a network of more than 50 LBG filling stations across Finland, Sweden and Norway by 2028.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s newest LBG filling stations were opened in Iisalmi and Liminka in early 2026. Sweco serves as St1\u2019s design and expert partner in Finland\u2019s LBG distribution station projects.<\/p>\n

Sweco\u2019s role covers a wide range of areas, including infrastructure and geotechnical design, automation and electrical design, as well as expert services related to operational safety. Sweco\u2019s extensive experience in energy and transport infrastructure design has supported the smooth and on\u2011schedule implementation of the stations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that Sweco has the necessary expertise across different design disciplines, which we see as essential for the success of distribution station projects. Sweco\u2019s clear ways of working and transparency at every stage of the project have been the cornerstones of our collaboration,\u201d<\/em> says Markus Brunfeldt<\/strong>, Network Operations Manager<\/span> at St1.<\/p>\n

Demand for liquefied biomethane is growing especially in heavy road transport, where LBG\u2019s high emission\u2011reduction potential and suitability for northern conditions make it a cost\u2011effective and rapidly deployable solution. According to Brunfeldt, transport companies are increasingly interested in gas\u2011powered vehicles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been great to expand our collaboration with St1 to also include biogas distribution. The growth seen in the distribution market increases interest in strengthening biogas production in Finland,<\/em>\u201d says Sweco\u2019s Client Manager, Tomas Norrena<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

St1 plans to expand its station network in the Nordic countries in phases, based on market development and customer needs. For Sweco, cooperation will continue across various design disciplines depending on project needs and scope.<\/p>\n

Long operating range and consistent performance which LBG enables make it a well-suited fuel option for trunk traffic and demanding transport routes, and Sweco contributes to the filling station projects according to their technical and design requirements.<\/p>\n
