engineering<\/h1>\n<p>The Riikinvoima eco power plant was completed in Lepp\u00e4virta according to plan and almost on schedule in 2017. The plant, which produces electricity and district heat from municipal waste, is the only one of its kind in Eastern Finland. Andritz, the plant supplier for the EPC execution, chose Sweco as the structural engineering provider.<\/p>\n<section class=\"section\">\n<div id=\"react_lKfXBaKGzEOuEehGzi6Iw\">\n<div class=\"textblockexpandable\" data-reactroot=\"\" data-reactid=\"1\" data-react-checksum=\"1704976509\">\n<div class=\"textblock\" data-reactid=\"2\">\n<div class=\"textblockexpandable__content-container\" data-reactid=\"5\">\n<div class=\"textblock__content\" data-reactid=\"6\">\n<div class=\"textblockexpandable__text\" data-reactid=\"7\">\n<div class=\"mainbody\" data-reactid=\"8\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2016, Finland instituted a Waste Act amendment that prohibited the landfill deposition of municipal waste. \u201cFinnish municipalities were forced to find alternative ways to process waste,\u201d says Managing Director\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ville Holopainen<\/span><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the Riikinvoima plant. At present, Finland has about 10 waste combustion plants, among which Riikinvoima is the only one in Eastern Finland. \u201cWe are currently processing the mixed waste generated by 58 municipalities.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andritz,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the process and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">equipment supplier for the Riikinvoima eco power plant, involved Sweco\u2019s structural engineers very early on, when the site was still covered by trees.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStructural engineers are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one of the most\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">important partners in power plant projects,\u201d says Project Manager\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Janne Puttonen<\/span><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of Andritz. According to him,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an experienced partner can be the key<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the successful completion of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0EPC execution. \u201cThe engineers proactively initiated discussions with other plant designers and offered solutions to push the project forward.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The long preliminary design phase of the Riikinvoima plant began in 2012. \u201cWe worked closely with the client to ensure that all solutions were cost-efficient and appropriate down to the last detail,\u201d says Department Manager for Structural Engineering\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jouni Hollo<\/span><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. At the moment, the Riikinvoima plant burns about 140,000\u202ftonnes of mixed waste a year. \u201cAt a regional level, our company provides a substantial boost to circular economy,\u201d Holopainen explains. The district heat produced covers about 80% of the demand within the town of Varkaus, and the electricity supplied is enough to heat roughly 4,300 detached houses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Riikinvoima\u2019s vision is to become Finland\u2019s most efficient eco power plant to promote circular economy.
