The construction of this entirely new kind of building required everyone involved to have the courage to do things differently. These efforts also gave rise to new wood construction design expertise.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mj\u00f6sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tower is located on the shore of Norway\u2019s largest lake,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mj\u00f8sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in the small town of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brumunddal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, approximately 140 kilometres from Oslo. The idea for the tower came from the founder of AB Invest, Arthur\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Buchardt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who owns the building together with his son, Anders\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Buchardt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mj\u00f6sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tower is an excellent display of the potential of wood construction,\u201d summarises wood building specialist\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Magne<\/span><\/strong><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sweco<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The approximately 11,300-square-metre, 18-floor and 81-metre-tall tower includes housing, offices, a luxury hotel and a restaurant with a roof terrace. Construction began in 2017 and was completed in spring 2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mj\u00f6sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was a fascinating and demanding project with strict timetables, as well as a great example of the cooperation between\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sweco\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0different offices,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>A stable high-rise can be built out of wood<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mj\u00f6sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tower uses a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0glulam column and beam structure as the main bearing. The slabs are made with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moelven\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tr\u00e48\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">slab system<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which enables spans of up to 8 metres in the intermediate floors.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is an ideal system<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the types of buildings that have been traditionally built out of steel and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prestressed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0concrete.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe glulam structure enables open space solutions, while also making the structure rigid enough for tall construction,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0states. Stability is always a challenge with tall buildings. \u201cThis project taught us a great deal about the dynamic properties of slender and lightweight wooden buildings.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Challenges related to stability were also tackled by increasing the weight of the building. The first 10 floors are made entirely of wood, but the intermediate floors of the 8 highest floors are\u00a0made out of\u00a0concrete. \u201cThe lessons\u00a0learned\u00a0and experience gained in this project will undoubtedly reduce the risks affecting different\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">parties<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in future high-rise projects,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Mj\u00f6sa\u00a0contains 2,600 cubic metres of wood<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mj\u00f6sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Tower is a model example of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efficientyet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0responsible urban construction. Material efficiency, long\u00a0life-cycle\u00a0and easy maintenance were considered in\u00a0all of\u00a0the building\u2019s solutions. For example, the building\u2019s load-bearing wooden structures are protected from rain and sunlight behind the wooden facade and glass elements.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A total of approximately 2,6<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">85<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0cubic metres of wood<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was used in the construction, and the frame structure was constructed insofar as possible at the factory under controlled conditions. The intermediate floors consist of a combination of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Moelve\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0glulam beams and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kerto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ae LVL Q panels. \u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kerto<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0LVL is a very strong, lightweight and dimension-accurate material for rapid\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">construction,\u201d summarises\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mets\u00e4<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Wood\u2019s Director of Technical Customer Service\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jussi<\/span><\/strong><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bj\u00f6rman<\/span><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The approximately 74-metre-tall lift and staircase shafts were\u00a0made out of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stora<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Enso\u2019s CLT elements. During construction, it took only about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">two\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">week<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to finish an entire floor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
