The world\u2019s tallest wooden building, Mj\u00f6sa tower, created new expertise in wood construction design<\/h1>\n

Rising on the shore of Lake Mj\u00f8sa, the 18-floor Mj\u00f6sa Tower is a record-breakingly tall, lightweight and streamlined wooden building. The construction of this entirely new kind of building required everyone involved to have the courage to do things differently. These efforts also gave rise to new wood construction design expertise.<\/p>\n

Mj\u00f6sa<\/span>\u00a0Tower is located on the shore of Norway\u2019s largest lake,\u00a0<\/span>Mj\u00f8sa<\/span>, in the small town of\u00a0<\/span>Brumunddal<\/span>, approximately 140 kilometres from Oslo. The idea for the tower came from the founder of AB Invest, Arthur\u00a0<\/span>Buchardt<\/span>, who owns the building together with his son, Anders\u00a0<\/span>Buchardt<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Mj\u00f6sa<\/span>\u00a0Tower is an excellent display of the potential of wood construction,\u201d summarises wood building specialist\u00a0<\/span>Magne<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>Sweco<\/span>. The approximately 11,300-square-metre, 18-floor and 81-metre-tall tower includes housing, offices, a luxury hotel and a restaurant with a roof terrace. Construction began in 2017 and was completed in spring 2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Mj\u00f6sa<\/span>\u00a0was a fascinating and demanding project with strict timetables, as well as a great example of the cooperation between\u00a0<\/span>Sweco\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0different offices,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span>\u00a0says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A stable high-rise can be built out of wood<\/h4>\n

Mj\u00f6sa<\/span>\u00a0Tower uses a<\/span>\u00a0glulam column and beam structure as the main bearing. The slabs are made with\u00a0<\/span>Moelven\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Tr\u00e48\u00a0<\/span>slab system<\/span>, which enables spans of up to 8 metres in the intermediate floors.\u00a0<\/span>This is an ideal system<\/span>\u00a0for the types of buildings that have been traditionally built out of steel and\u00a0<\/span>prestressed<\/span>\u00a0concrete.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe glulam structure enables open space solutions, while also making the structure rigid enough for tall construction,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span>\u00a0states. Stability is always a challenge with tall buildings. \u201cThis project taught us a great deal about the dynamic properties of slender and lightweight wooden buildings.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Challenges related to stability were also tackled by increasing the weight of the building. The first 10 floors are made entirely of wood, but the intermediate floors of the 8 highest floors are\u00a0made out of\u00a0concrete. \u201cThe lessons\u00a0learned\u00a0and experience gained in this project will undoubtedly reduce the risks affecting different\u00a0<\/span>parties<\/span>\u00a0in future high-rise projects,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Bjertn\u00e6s<\/span>\u00a0says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mj\u00f6sa\u00a0contains 2,600 cubic metres of wood<\/h4>\n

Mj\u00f6sa<\/span>\u00a0Tower is a model example of\u00a0<\/span>efficientyet<\/span>\u00a0responsible urban construction. Material efficiency, long\u00a0life-cycle\u00a0and easy maintenance were considered in\u00a0all of\u00a0the building\u2019s solutions. For example, the building\u2019s load-bearing wooden structures are protected from rain and sunlight behind the wooden facade and glass elements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A total of approximately 2,6<\/span>85<\/span>\u00a0cubic metres of wood<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>was used in the construction, and the frame structure was constructed insofar as possible at the factory under controlled conditions. The intermediate floors consist of a combination of\u00a0<\/span>Moelve\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0glulam beams and\u00a0<\/span>Kerto<\/span>\u00ae LVL Q panels. \u201d<\/span>Kerto<\/span>\u00a0LVL is a very strong, lightweight and dimension-accurate material for rapid\u00a0<\/span>construction,\u201d summarises\u00a0<\/span>Mets\u00e4<\/span>\u00a0Wood\u2019s Director of Technical Customer Service\u00a0<\/span>Jussi<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Bj\u00f6rman<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The approximately 74-metre-tall lift and staircase shafts were\u00a0made out of\u00a0<\/span>Stora<\/span>\u00a0Enso\u2019s CLT elements. During construction, it took only about\u00a0<\/span>two\u00a0<\/span>week<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to finish an entire floor<\/span>. The total time is 9 months on 18 stories.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cDue to the light weight of wooden structural parts, we did not need any heavy machinery, which shortened the construction time by 35\u201340% compared to<\/span>\u00a0on site<\/span>\u00a0concrete construction,\u201d says\u00a0<\/span>Moelven<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Limtre<\/span>\u00a0AS\u2019s CEO\u00a0<\/span>Rune Abrahamsen<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
