The building\u2019s load-bearing frame is made of lightweight concrete and the facade is plastered, as was the style in the 60s. The building\u2019s structures, particularly the poorly insulated roof, had been strained by winter temperature fluctuations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:276,&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe had problems with freezing drainpipes before the roof was provided with additional insulation. The plaster had fallen into disrepair, with chippings falling down on the street,\u201d says\u00a0<strong>Reijo Loponen<\/strong>, the chairman of the housing company\u2019s board. The housing company did not want to apply plaster mesh to the building. \u201cA facade renovation was the only option.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:276,&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sweco experts carried out a condition survey on the building, which confirmed the housing company\u2019s suspicions: the plaster was poorly adhered to its base. The original wooden double-glazed windows were causing drafts in the apartments, and the old linseed oil paint was starting to peel. \u201cWe replaced them with durable, triple-glazed aluminium windows,\u201d Loponen says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:276,&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the project\u2019s building control requirements was the use of traditional three-coat plaster on the facade. The balconies\u2019 red sills typical of the 60s also had to be preserved. However, that did not prevent the balconies from being outfitted with new railings and glazing. \u201cGlazing makes balconies more comfortable and protects structures from moisture, significantly increasing their service life,\u201d Luhtam\u00e4ki says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:276,&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,4]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the roof, the project included repairs on the eaves and the dismantling of an old, redundant oil heating chimney.
