For the first time ever, the railway yard will see extensive renovation work, including the renewal of switches, electric rails and the safety device systems.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe focus of the project is on safety devices, meaning that functionality is, first and foremost, enhanced by new safety device technology,\u201d explains Project Manager <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Timo Ripatti <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from Sweco.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency selected Sweco to lead the project design and construction, based on a tendering process. \u201cIt came down to quality and price,\u201d says Project Manager Pekka Rautoja from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. He believes that demanding projects call for good references and comprehensive experience. \u201cIn such a busy place, you really must know what you are doing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;469777462&quot;:[567,1276,2552,3828,5103,6379,8364],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Helsinki railway yard sees around a thousand passing trains each day. Developing the systems allows for the capacity to be increased by about 20 per cent. \u201cIt should be enough for the next 10 to 20 years,\u201d Rautoja says. Ripatti\u00a0and Rautoja feel that the project\u2019s greatest achievement is that the challenging tasks were performed successfully without disrupting railway traffic. The interruption was indeed preceded by long preparations and negotiations.
