W\u00e4in\u00f6 Aaltonen Museum in Turku<\/h1>\n

The protected museum building created by sculptor W\u00e4in\u00f6 Aaltonen was renovated and extended with a new building on the banks of the River Aura in Turku. Sweco\u2019s<\/em> structural engineers<\/a> <\/em>helped create functional and safe premises for museum employees, visitors and artworks alike.<\/em><\/p>\n

The largest renovation project in the history of the W\u00e4in\u00f6 Aaltonen Museum<\/h2>\n

W\u00e4in\u00f6 Aaltonen Museum<\/a> was completed on the banks of the River Aura in Turku in 1967, designed by the sculptor himself together with the architectural practice of his son and daughter-in-law. In 2022, planning began for the most extensive refurbishment and extension project in the museum\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSince its completion, only minor repair and improvement works had been carried out at the museum, so it was high time for a comprehensive renovation while also bringing the building\u2019s ageing technical systems and accessibility up to modern standards,\u201d says Reino P\u00f6yh\u00f6nen<\/strong>, Construction Engineering Manager for the City of Turku.<\/div>\n

Sweco\u2019s structural engineers<\/a> were involved in both the refurbishment and the extension. From a structural engineering perspective, the project was unique. \u201cThe original building is completely individual: a work of art in its own right,\u201d summarises Jarno Pausio<\/strong>, Project Manager at Sweco.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The structural drawings found in the city archives proved surprisingly accurate, as only limited alterations had been made to the museum over the past 60 years. However, building information modelling was needed to integrate the new building services systems with the existing structure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe structural model was created on top of a laser-scanned model of the building,\u201d explains Pausio. Sweco was responsible for BIM coordination<\/a> as well as moisture management<\/a> and cleanliness management coordination. \u201cWe were able to draw on important specialist expertise from within Sweco, for example in designing the airtightness of the original building.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
