Vantaa Energia partners with Sweco for electricity storage facility
Ocotber 27, 2025
The nearly 10-megawatt hour electricity storage facility in Rekola, Vantaa, will be implemented using the EPCM model. Sweco is responsible for the planning and management of the project. The procurement decisions are made by Vantaa Energy. The battery storage will be supplied by the Dutch company Alfen.
The electric battery plant is based on lithium-ion technology and has a discharge and charging capacity of almost 10 megawatts and a charging capacity of 10 megawatt-hours. The electric battery supports the stability of the electricity grid in rapid changes in demand or supply, and its strength is its excellent responsiveness.
“The electricity storage facility is a good match for the 60-megawatt electric boiler currently being built in the Martinlaakso power plant area, which will produce district heat with renewable electricity from the end of the year,” says Sami Lehtiniemi, Vice President, Electricity Business at Vantaa Energy.
“Electric battery storage facilities will play a key role in the energy systems of the future. They enable the efficient use of renewable energy and improve the stability of the electricity grid. Sweco has strong expertise and experience in the design and implementation of these innovative solutions, and it is great to be involved in the Rekola electricity storage project in Vantaa,” says Tuomas Salminen, Division Director, Industry and Energy, Sweco Finland.
