Customer focus: Principles of a healing environment

Customer focus: Principles of a healing environment

From the very beginning, our goal is to understand the customer’s objectives and clarify them as starting points for design. We take into account the needs of different user groups—patients, staff, and visitors—and strive to find functional solutions that address architectural, functional, and financial goals.

Our in-depth knowledge of the principles of a healing environment enables design solutions that reduce hospital stays and increase employee comfort. We design humane environments that not only meet functional requirements but also support healing and smooth workflows by providing calm, adaptable, and recovery-conducive spaces.

The Kymenlaakso Central Hospital project combined functionality, economy, and the principles of a healing environment.

Sustainable development as the cornerstone of design work

Sustainable development as the cornerstone of design work

Sweco’s architects and sustainability experts know how to meet customers’ goals from the perspective of the green transition. Our designers implement the Sustainable Development Goals in a manner appropriate for each site.

We design spaces that are as flexible as possible and can be transformed to meet new needs with minimal investment and carbon footprint. Reducing our carbon footprint is an integral part of every design project. We consider the carbon dioxide emissions of a building’s life cycle and, where possible, strive to use low-carbon materials, energy-efficient solutions, and innovative design practices.

Community spirit and urban planning as part of social and healthcare architecture

Sweco promotes community and social sustainability in its social and healthcare architecture. Due to their intended use, hospital buildings are important to the community and, due to their central location and large size, are also significant in terms of the cityscape. Sweco’s goal is to communicate the building’s operations through architecture and to contribute to improving the quality of the environment. We ensure easy access to functions for all user groups.

We respond to the growing demand for care services with innovative design solutions that promote a sense of community and meet the needs of different user groups.

Building healthcare as a working environment: Well-being and comfort at work

A hospital or care environment is not only a place where patients are treated, but also an important working environment where employee comfort plays a significant role. In stressful work situations, opportunities for recovery are necessary even during the working day, as sufficient rest and recreation are key factors for the well-being and coping of personnel.

Competition for healthcare professionals is fierce. Through building and space design, we can significantly impact job satisfaction factors, which can be decisive in recruitment and employee engagement.

VR and artificial intelligence as architects’ tools

In illustrating the designs, we utilize VR technology, which offers an immersive virtual experience of the spaces at the design stage. This allows for a functional examination of the premises in three dimensions.

We utilize artificial intelligence in design. Sweco’s multidisciplinary expertise ensures that our design tools and methods remain at the forefront of development, including in terms of AI. In addition to our technological capabilities, we prioritize human interactions in our projects. Listening to users and empathizing with their experiences are key factors in ensuring a successful outcome.
