Architecture of learning environments – Flexible spaces support learning and well-being

Schools and daycare centres are not only places of learning but also stimulating spaces that support children’s and young people’s creativity and overall well-being. At Sweco, we create learning environments that adapt flexibly to pedagogical needs and inspire both students and teachers to learn and work.

Comprehensive architectural design of learning environments

At Sweco, we offer master and architectural design services for learning environments at all project stages. Our expertise covers both new buildings and renovation and expansion projects. We have extensive experience in various cooperative project forms, such as turnkey projects, life-cycle projects, and alliance projects.

We approach the design task holistically. By providing all design disciplines under the same roof, we guarantee smooth collaboration and synergy benefits for the customer. We have implemented dozens of learning environment projects throughout Finland.

Architectural solutions for sustainable development

Our learning-environment architectural services can contribute to energy-efficiency and material-use optimisation objectives in defined projects, based on documented design measures and project-specific performance criteria. In suitable projects, we may include solutions such as solar panels or geothermal heat where project conditions, technical feasibility, and client requirements allow.

Where project requirements allow, we may use wood in selected frame, façade, interior, and furniture solutions; any carbon implications are assessed on a project-specific basis.

Flexibility and individuality in the architecture of kindergartens and schools

We are constantly developing our services to meet the latest trends and the needs of our clients and users. One of the key directions for development is the adaptability of spaces. We design spaces that effortlessly adapt to the needs of users, both in the short and long term; the possibilities for adaptability during the life cycle of a building must be considered from the very beginning of the design process.

The diversification of society creates a need to design spaces that meet the needs of various languages, religions, cultures, and ways of learning. We create spatial solutions that support the diversity of learners and provide equal opportunities for learning for everyone.

We design learning environments that balance pedagogical requirements with defined sustainability measures and spatial flexibility, supported by project-specific design criteria.
