Energy storage expert services

Sweco offers extensive technical and strategic expertise and an international network of experts for every stage of the life cycle of energy storage facilities, such as electric batteries. We enable a project that supports your organisation’s environmental goals, from planning to implementation and project management. Check out the service!

Energy storage supports the green transition

The transition from fossil energy sources to renewable energy requires efficient storage of electricity and heat. Storing renewable energy in electric and heat accumulators, for example, enables more accurate utilisation of available energy. At the same time, the production of renewable energy will be stabilised in different weather conditions and consumption situations.

In addition to supporting the green transition, energy storage can offer significant cost savings and entirely new sources of revenue. We help identify a suitable form of energy storage and develop the business to be more economical, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

International expert in energy storage projects

Sweco’s international network of experts brings extensive experience in different technologies and applications to energy storage projects. Although energy storage is a relatively new sector in Finland, the utilisation of energy storages, such as batteries, is already well advanced in Europe. We also bring this expertise to projects in Finland.

In addition, our existing contacts with technology suppliers will streamline the progress of the project. We provide you with know-how for every phase of battery investment, from market surveys  to overall design and construction management.

Strategic consulting steers the project in the right direction

The development of business related to energy storage requires a clear view of the return on investment. Already at the beginning of project development, our strategic consulting experts ensure that decision-making is steered in the right direction with information. We produce feasibility and cost information , for example, through demand forecasts and market surveys.

In addition to financial constraints, we help take into account various ESG and responsibility goals, the ethics of equipment suppliers and the transparency of different value chains, for example in battery materials.

Concept that works with technical consulting

The profitability of an energy storage facility depends on the operating strategy. We help you create  a functional concept already in the pre-design phase that takes existing synergies into account. We will investigate the current business potential and energy storage solutions to make operations more profitable and responsible.

Our technical consulting services include technology surveys, Capex and Opex profitability calculations, site surveys and due diligence studies. We also help compare equipment suppliers and contractors and evaluate the technical boundary conditions of the chosen solution, such as requirements for the electricity network.

We are constantly exploring new alternatives and monitoring the development of the market. In addition to electric and heat accumulators, potential opportunities include hydrogen storages, sand batteries and supercapacitors.

Overall planning of energy storage

Sweco provides you with all energy storage design services from basic design to detail-level electrical, infrastructure and earthworks design. We also utilise comprehensive design expertise in electricity networks and transformer substations in our projects and, if necessary, we are responsible for the layout, process and construction design of the plant.

In addition, we act as a reliable partner in the licensing and zoning of energy storage projects, as well as in the tendering of contractors and equipment purchases. In the implementation phase, responsibility is transferred smoothly in-house to project management and production professionals.

Electric and heat accumulators

Various electric batteries can solve several problems related to energy storage in industry. Batteries have several applications both in connection with existing industrial plants and as a separate investment. We help you evaluate the most profitable implementation method and the most suitable solutions.

Heat storage facilities, i.e. heat accumulators, are utilised especially in district heat production and the process industry. Waste heat from various water-circulating systems can also be utilised in wastewater treatment plants and other infrastructure processes.

Water pumped storage power plants

Pumped storage plants are the most common energy storage technology in the European electricity grid. They even out differences in electricity consumption and production, which supports the operation of the main grid. Pumped storage power plants are suitable for long-term storage of large amounts of energy. Sweco’s international network of experts, especially in Norway and Sweden, provides comprehensive expertise in pumped storage power plant design and consulting.

Hydrogen stocks

Hydrogen acts as an energy carrier, like electricity, and will play an important role in balancing production and demand in the electricity grid. Storing hydrogen in a gaseous state requires a high pressure level (350-700 bar) and a liquefied temperature below -253 °C. As technologies develop, hydrogen can be used in a variety of ways in energy storage and transport.

E-fuels

One of the uses of hydrogen in energy storage is its use in the production of electric fuels such as synthetic methane and methanol. There are already ready-made processes and a functioning infrastructure for distributing and storing synthetic methane. Electric fuels can be used in both road and maritime transport.
