Havainnekuva Fazerin tehtaasta: rusehtava rakennus, jonka ympärillä siniset tolpat

Sweco Collaborates in Fazer’s Factory Project

Published: October 5, 2025

Fazer starts the renewal of its chocolate production and invests approximately EUR 400 million in the construction of a new chocolate factory in Lahti. The investment is the largest in Fazer’s history, and it is also very significant on the scale of the Finnish food industry.

The project’s scope is approximately 33,000 gross square metres, and the factory is scheduled for completion in 2028. Sweco is responsible for the overall design of the food factory. The factory to be built in Lahti will combine Fazer’s chocolate expertise with highly automated production lines, enabling the development of new product types. The factory will be designed to be CO2-free, utilizing a comprehensive energy cycle and electrification, as well as the efficient use of raw materials, enabled by technology, which will also significantly reduce manufacturing waste. The aim is to achieve a BREEAM environmental classification for the project.

The new factory stands in a prominent location along the Lahti motorway, where its visibility has been carefully considered. Special attention has been given to the architectural expression of both the motorway-facing façade and the main entrance. The design draws inspiration from Fazer’s strong brand identity and the building’s impressive scale, aiming for a restrained yet striking visual impact. The architectural concept evokes the image of a chocolate tablet breaking into pieces: playful, distinctive, and instantly recognizable.

“The Lahti factory strengthens Fazer’s position as the leading confectionery manufacturer in the Nordic countries. The new building combines the company’s long expertise in chocolate with modern design solutions. Sweco is an excellent partner for us in designing them,” says Harri Kämppä, Director of the Factory Project at Fazer.

“We are involved in Fazer’s largest investment, which is also significant for the Finnish food industry. The project combines Sweco’s multidisciplinary expertise with long experience in the food industry. These enable sustainable food production and the development of new production methods,” says Thomas Hietto, Managing Director of Sweco Finland.
