Power-to-X technology is part of the solution to the energy transition

Power-to-X is a general term for technologies that convert renewable electricity into another form of energy, such as fuels, and if needed, back into electricity. The essential raw material is green hydrogen, produced with renewable electricity.
The challenge of renewable electricity production is its variability. Power-to-X enables, among other things, the storage of renewable electricity as hydrogen or as refined synthetic fuel.

Hydrogen is produced from water by electrolysis using wind or solar energyHydrogen can be utilized later, further processed, or converted back into electricity

Hydrogen projects are already underway

Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant is being built in Harjavalta.

    • P2X Solutions’ plant is estimated to reduce Finland’s carbon dioxide emissions by
      40,000 tons annually
    • The oxygen and heat generated as by-products in the production process will be utilized in other local industries
    • The plant is expected to start production in 2024

Sweco has also been selected to design dozens of other Power-to-X projects at various stages.

Aiming for global markets

Power-to-X and hydrogen play a significant role in achieving the green transition. They can help Finland reach its ambitious emission targets, but the opportunities are even broader:

A functioning hydrogen economy and related solutions could become a competitive export advantage for Finland, based on both expertise and products. As always, there may be bumps along the way, but in the long term, I am convinced that hydrogen will have a central role in managing climate change. There is global demand for these solutions.
