SBTi Sweco

Towards net-zero by 2040

Sweco’s goal is to achieve net-zero emissions in its own operations by 2040 and to halve the company’s emissions by 2030 from base-year 2020 levels.

SBTi aligned – climate targets based on the latest science

Sweco adheres to the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and has set climate targets aligned with what is required to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

In 2024, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated and approved Sweco’s near-term targets for 2030. Targets cover Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are well in line with the latest science and the Carbon Law.

Sweco’s SBTi-approved targets

  • Sweco commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90 per cent by 2030 from a 2020 base year.
  • Sweco also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel- and energy-related activities, waste management, business travel and employee commuting by 30 per cent by within the same timeframe.
  • Base year 2020.

Sweco follows the Carbon Law, developed by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, which involves halving the company’s emissions every decade. The near-term targets are consistent with the Carbon Law and halving total emissions by 2030.

Net-zero Sweco by 2040

Sweco’s long-term target remains to reduce emissions across the company’s value chain and to achieve net-zero by 2040. All emissions reduction efforts are to be achieved primarily through mitigation measures. Remaining residual emissions will be permanently removed through carbon sinks or carbon capture, via established and third-party verified mechanisms. The compensation activities will be led centralized by Sweco Group.

To achieve the emission reduction target validated by SBTi, we monitor and report our own greenhouse gas emissions in all Scope 1-3 classes in accordance with the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard. This means that we not only monitor direct emissions from our own operations, but also indirect emissions generated through procurement, transport and stakeholders, for example. With this multifaceted approach, we ensure that we understand and can manage the environmental impact of our entire value chain.

We have reported our carbon dioxide emissions throughout the Group through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) starting in 2022. The third-party Futureproofed audit has begun in 2024: we annually calculate our own carbon footprint in all Sweco Group countries based on uniform criteria using the Futureproofed tool. We will update the measures in our emission reduction roadmap and monitor our annual progress towards our emission reduction target. Based on the calculations, we make the necessary decisions and recommendations for action in Sweco’s internal operations in order to achieve our net-zero target.

Greenhouse gas emissions in 2020–2025 at Sweco Finland

Diagram visualising Sweco Finland's greenhouse gas emissions from year 2020 to 2025, and reduction activities as well as targets by 2030 and 2040.

Sweco’s carbon footprint in brief

  1. Sweco Finland’s greenhouse gas emissions were 10,441 tonnes of CO2e in 2025 (total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions combined). Total emissions decreased by 11% compared to the year 2024.
  2. Sweco Finland’s emission intensity was 3.6 tonnes CO2e per full-time employee in 2025. The emission intensity per FTE decreased by 11%, even though the number of employees has increased both organically and through acquisitions.
    • Direct emissions from our own activities (Scope 1) decreased by 17%.
    • Emissions from our facilities (Scope 2) decreased by 32%.
    • Indirect emissions (Scope 3) decreased by 8%.
  1. Sweco Group’s greenhouse gas emissions were 64,478 tonnes CO2e in 2025. In total, Sweco Group’s greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 8% in 2025 compared to 2024.
    • Scope 1 emissions decreased by 24%.
    • Scope 2 emissions decreased by 49%.
    • Scope 3 emissions decerased by 3%.

Key actions for greenhouse gas emission reductions

  1. Decrease energy consumption at the offices and improve energy-efficiency. The Helsinki office in Ilmala has switched to geothermal heat and cooling and received LEED Gold certification for the operational phase in 2024.
  2. Transition to renewable electricity contracts at Sweco’s offices together with property owners. In Finland, already 42% of the electricity contracts are renewable.
  3. Electrification of the vehicle fleet across Group. In Finland, the goal is to have fully electric company cars by 2029. By the end of 2025, the car fleet is 41% electrified in Finland.
  4. We have specified the sustainability criteria related to the leasing agreements of our offices.
  5. We commit our subcontractors and suppliers in our supply chains to reduce their emissions and demand that the emissions of purchased goods and services will be reduced.
  6. Motivate and incentivise employees to contribute to low-carbon business travel and commuting. In Finland, we have updated our business travel policy to prefer train instead of air travel.
  7. We support our employees in sustainable commuting between home and work and offer commuter ticket benefits in Finland. We also develop our office facilities to support biking to work.
