Hippos Centre Jyväskylä implemented using a project management model

Published on 5 June 2026 (previously on the Fimpec.fi website).

The Hippos Centre in Jyväskylä is planned as a comprehensive hub for sports, physical activity, and wellbeing, where various stakeholders will jointly develop activities and services.

The Hippos Centre will provide facilities for approximately 20 different sports, including athletics, artistic gymnastics, martial arts, group fitness, and ball games. In addition to the sports facilities, the complex will also house a daycare centre, restaurants, and retail premises.

The Ice Sports Centre will be delivered through the renovation and expansion of the existing ice arena. In addition, three practice ice rinks will be constructed at the Hippos site. A total of 26,000 square metres of space will be allocated for the Knowledge and Competence Centre. Outdoor areas will include a sports park for public use and 900 parking spaces.

The coordination of the Hippos Centre construction project includes site supervision, scheduling, procurement, cost control, and the management of implementation design. The project is being carried out in collaboration with multiple stakeholders and is progressing in phases.

Local Collaboration

The project draws on local expertise and is managed by a collaborative project management organization responsible for advancing the overall development together with the client. The project’s objective is to develop the area and strengthen its role as an integral part of the urban environment.

“Fimpec, now part of Sweco, has strong roots in Jyväskylä, and we have built an experienced local project management organization that is responsible for leading and delivering the Hippos project together with our client. As a local operator, it has been an honor to be involved in a project that contributes to the development of the Jyväskylä region and strengthens local infrastructure. The new Hippos will become a significant regional hub with considerable societal value,” says Mikko Turunen, Director of Project Management and Construction Management at Sweco.

“We are pleased to move the project forward in cooperation with various stakeholders. Extensive experience in managing large-scale real estate projects, local expertise, and a broad professional network are key factors in the successful implementation of the project,” says Jouni Alho, CEO of Sepos Oy.

Further information about the project is available on the Hippos Centre website.
