Archaeological Services – Investigation and study of archaeological cultural heritage

Sweco provides archaeological services for land-use planning as well as infrastructure and construction projects. Our services deliver up-to-date and reliable information on archaeological cultural heritage, archaeological remains, and how they are taken into account in project planning.

Archaeological assessments and surveys support decision-making and regulatory processes. We collaborate with planners, designers, and heritage authorities throughout the entire project.

Scheduling of archaelogical work in a project

Early-stage assessments
Archaeological surveys or assessments are carried out at the initial stage of planning, before zoning or before project plans are finalized. This helps reduce the need for changes at later stages.

Seasonal factors
Archaeological fieldwork and excavations are mainly conducted during the snow-free season, from spring to autumn. In winter, frost and snow cover restrict research possibilities.

Authorities and permitting processes
The Finnish Heritage Agency or the regional responsible museum reviews research plans. The processing times for official statements influence the overall project schedule.

Archaeological Services – From assessments to excavations and monitoring

Archaeological assessments
Archaeological assessments are often the first step in zoning and project planning. We evaluate the archaeological potential of an area and determine whether there are known or potential archaeological remains. We also assess how planned activities may impact archaeological cultural heritage.

The results are reported to the client and heritage authorities in accordance with applicable guidelines.

Detailed investigations
Detailed investigations are carried out, for example, in connection with detailed zoning plans and construction projects when precise information is required about the location, extent, and nature of archaeological remains.

Trial excavations
Trial excavations are conducted to determine the boundaries, dating, and state of preservation of a site. Based on the results, the need and scope of further investigations are assessed.

Archaeological monitoring
We monitor machine-assisted excavation work in areas with archaeological remains and document any archaeological findings uncovered during the work.

Rescue excavations
We carry out rescue excavations when changes in land use require the investigation of an archaeological site prior to its removal or alteration. Excavations are conducted in accordance with official decisions and approved research plans.

When is an archaeological assessment required?

The need for an archaeological assessment depends on the location of the area, previous research, and changes in land use. Survey data typically becomes outdated within approximately ten years, which is why areas often need to be reassessed in connection with land use or project planning.

Assessing archaeological potential helps to target fieldwork appropriately and avoid unnecessary investigations. Heavily modified areas, such as former aggregate extraction sites, are generally not considered archaeologically significant. However, in most planning projects, a field-based archaeological assessment is still required to obtain a reliable overall understanding.
