Sweco involved in the general planning phase of the East Railway

Itärata Oy has selected Sweco and Finnmap Infra (part of the Solwers Group) to prepare the general plan for the Porvoo–Koria section of the East Railway. The planning agreement was signed on 16 June.

The East Railway project aims to create a high-speed rail connection from the Lentorata line via Porvoo to Kouvola, improving connections to eastern Finland. The project will serve approximately two million residents and forms part of the European TEN-T core network.

Together with Finnmap Infra Oy, Sweco’s experts will deliver the general planning services for Section B of the Eas Railway from Porvoo to Kouvola. Sweco’s areas of expertise include railway engineering design, geotechnical engineering, structures engineering, transport planning, and the integration of environmental and land use considerations.

In addition, Sweco will carry out ground investigations for one section of the railway alignment.

During the general planning phase, the approximate alignment and land requirements of the railway, as well as its relationship with the surrounding land use, are defined. The final alignment will be refined in the subsequent railway planning phase, which begins after completion of the general plan. The general plan is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
