Sweco Selected as Partner in Finland’s national hydrogen transmission network Agreements

In 2025, Gasgrid Vetyverkot Oy awarded ILF Consulting Engineers two framework agreements under Finland’s national hydrogen transmission network program. Sweco Finland is pleased to participate in the program as ILF’s partner within both parts of the framework agreements.

The awarded framework agreements cover the following scopes:

  • Engineering services for compressor stations (Part 1)
  • Engineering services for onshore hydrogen pipelines (Part 2)

Through these framework agreements, ILF and Sweco support the planning and phased development of Finland’s national hydrogen transmission network. Finnish National Transmission Network forms the backbone of Finland’s future hydrogen infrastructure and creates the foundation for integration into the wider European hydrogen market. The hydrogen transmission network will enable large‑scale, cost‑efficient transport of hydrogen, balancing between production and consumption, and preparedness for future storage solutions. Gasgrid’s objective is to develop a safe, high‑performance and forward‑looking hydrogen infrastructure that supports hydrogen production, transmission and use as part of the evolving energy system.

Within the framework, Sweco contributes extensive multidisciplinary expertise, including energy and pipeline infrastructure, compressor and industrial plant engineering, civil and geotechnical design, environmental and ecological studies, and chemical and process safety.

“Developing Finland’s hydrogen transmission network is a key step towards an integrated European hydrogen market. The network is a cross‑cutting part of the entire energy system, where safety, reliability and future scalability are essential. Sweco brings strong experience in gas and energy networks as well as complex industrial infrastructure projects, and this expertise plays a central role in supporting the H₂ Backbone development together with ILF. We are proud to be part of this strategically important hydrogen infrastructure program in Northern Europe,” says Simon Fröjdö, Business Lead for Hydrogen and Gas Networks at Sweco.
