Published: Sept 18, 2023

Tampereen Raitiotie Oy has chosen the PIRKKO alliance to implement the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa tramway, the extension of the present tram line in Tampere region in Finland. The development phase will begin this autumn in cooperation between the alliance partners Sweco, YIT, AFRY and NRC Group. The subscribers in the alliance are represented by Tampereen Raitiotie Oy, the City of Tampere and the municipality of Pirkkala.

The councils of Tampere and Pirkkala will decide on the construction of the tramway at the end of the alliance’s development phase in October 2024. Operation could start in January 2029. The total cost estimate for the development phase is EUR 13.5 million.

The project consists of two railway branches and an extension of the existing depot. The railway branches will be built from Sori Square to Pirkkala Suuppa and from the Kauppi campus to Linnainmaa. A total of approximately 13.6 kilometres of the new tramway line will be created, including the new tramway bridges over Highways 9 and 12.

The development phase employs approximately 50 experts from Sweco, who work in the PIRKKO alliance in street, traffic, bridge, tramway, electrical and technical system design tasks, zoning, land use, permit and environmental consulting, project communications and interaction tasks, as well as information and risk management.

“Renewed partnership is the most honest way of showing trust on our expertice. It is great to be able to continue cooperation with the City of Tampere and Tampereen Raitiotie Oy, and begin the cooperation with the municipality of Pirkkala to develop an even more sustainable, vibrant and functional urban region. Good experiences from the previous phases of the Tampere Tramway create a solid foundation for this project, and we are looking forward to the start of the project,” says Juho Siipo, Division Director, Infrastructure and Transportation, Sweco.
