Sweco publishes Sustainability and Annual Report 2023: Green transition driver of growth
Published: Apr 8, 2024
Sweco Group reports a year of robust growth driven by the ongoing green transition and consolidates its position as Europe’s leading engineering and consulting company. The top priorities of Sweco’s growth strategy in Finland are the energy transition, sustainable society and strategic sustainability.
Sweco has published its Sustainability Report and Annual Report for 2023. The growth in the Group’s net sales (17%) is mainly driven by major client investments, from both the public and the private sectors, in the accelerating green transition.
“As elsewhere in Europe, Finnish cities and municipalities as well as industry and the construction sector, are increasingly investing in the energy transition, reducing carbon emissions, resource efficiency and taking biodiversity into account. We see this as an opportunity for growth and are investing in the development of strategic sustainability consulting in Finland,” says Iida Vakkuri, CSO, Sweco Finland.
Sweco has expanded its carbon footprint calculation and invests in diversity in the work community
Sweco has reviewed the criteria, coefficients and scope of carbon footprint calculation.
“In Finland, we have updated our carbon neutrality target with the expanded carbon footprint calculation. Understanding the full scope will help us target emission reduction measures at the right, most impactful areas. Especially due to the significantly increased Scope 3 emissions, we will make changes to our operating methods in the coming years. Purchased goods and services, as well as work commuting and business travel, account for more than half of our emissions. The former, in particular, requires deeper redevelopment of the processes of the entire supply chain,” Iida Vakkuri says.
Sweco Finland aims to be carbon neutral in Scope 1 and 2 emission classes by 2030, and in Scope 3 emissions by 2040, which is in line with Sweco Group’s target.
In addition, during 2023, Sweco has invested in diversity and equality in the work community in Finland.
“The starting point for our diversity work is that everyone must feel that they can come to work as themselves. We have developed a diversity and inclusion strategy, one of the goals of which is to increase the number of women to 30% by 2026. We have invested in being able to offer career opportunities to our English-speaking experts by, for example, offering language training and coaching, and we also do more internal communication in English. In addition, we established a Diversity group open to all, where every Sweco member has the opportunity to bring themes they feel are important to the discussion. An excellent example is the consideration of neurodiversity in the work community, which has received widespread praise from Sweco employees,” says Sari Metsänen, HR Director at Sweco Finland.
