Project management in Kuopio: examples of our projects
Sweco Kuopio has been involved in many demanding construction and development projects in Northern Savonia, including in expert and client representative consultant roles.
Niirala School Renovation – a heritage building returned to educational use
In the renovation of Niirala School in Kuopio, an old, protected school building was restored to educational use. The work required balancing the building’s cultural and historical values, today’s technical requirements, and the needs of the school’s users.
The project was carried out as a collaborative construction management contract. We acted as the client’s consultant on the project and were responsible for client consultancy, construction supervision, and moisture management coordination throughout the implementation phase.
The project was completed in autumn 2022, and the total costs came in approximately three million euros under budget — a rare outcome in a demanding renovation project.

Arts High School Lumit – an architecturally distinctive upper secondary school in the heart of Kuopio
Arts High School Lumit represents demanding public school construction in a dense urban environment. Located in the centre of Kuopio, this specialist upper secondary school provides facilities for music, dance, and drama education, continuing the city’s long tradition of specialist upper secondary schools. The building was put into use in August 2022.
Architectural quality and the special requirements of the spaces were central to the project. The building includes, among other things, a Black Box theatre as well as rehearsal and teaching spaces. The facilities were designed to be multifunctional, serving both school activities and events for city residents.
Sweco was involved in the project as a broad-based design partner: the team was responsible for structural engineering and technical solutions, including moisture management, element design, acoustic solutions, and coordination of supervision together with the other areas of construction.

Demolition of Savon ammattiopisto: a 92% recycling rate was no accident
The demolition of the building formerly located on Presidentinkatu in Savon ammattiopisto was carried out in the centre of Kuopio as part of the area’s transformation in 2022–2023. As a result of the project, the demolition work achieved a recycling and recovery rate of approximately 92%, which reflects the extensive reuse of materials during the demolition process.
The demolition was carried out in phases, and the site was integrated into the surrounding urban structure. Concrete materials were crushed and reused, and the recycling of metals and other demolition materials was also carried out systematically as part of the demolition work.
Sweco acted as the client’s consultant on the project. Our responsibilities included demolition planning, surveys, quantity calculations, and asbestos and hazardous materials assessments, which created the conditions for controlled demolition work and material recovery.
