Kupittaa is one of Turku’s growing areas. The Joki Visitor and Innovation Center is located in the heart of Turku Science Park, in the immediate vicinity of DataCity and BioCity. It opened in 2017. Sweco acted as the structure and element designer for the center.

Joki, which is unique in the Nordic countries and Finland’s first regional visitor center, is a diverse and interactive experience. It offers year-round interactive exhibitions and fresh perspectives on the region’s economy, urban development and attractions.

Located in the heart of the Turku campus, the visitor center serves as a modern exhibition space for innovation, business and research. In the new premises, companies, universities and the City of Turku in the Turku area will present their operations, current phenomena and the Turku area as an innovative, competitive and developing operating environment.

Sweco acted as the structure and element designer for the center. The challenge for the project was the location of the round part of the building at the intersection of four plots, as a result of which part of the building acts as a projection on a curved wall beam.

The project was built in the middle of a busy workplace concentration, which made risk management important. The operation of the neighboring houses had been maintained normal throughout the construction.
