Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) tells about the environmental impact of the entire life cycle of the product or process

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) reports the life cycle environmental impacts of a product or process according to the standard EN 15804. Global Warming Potential (GWP) is still among the core indicators in life cycle analyses (LCA), but EPDs cover a multitude of other indicators as well from ozone depletion to eutrophication and resource depletion.

EPD is a third-party verified and internationally well-known and accepted environmental impact reporting document. EPDs can be published in international platforms or in the Finnish database administered by The Building Information Foundation RTS sr.

EPD can be prepared for a single product or a group of products with similar function, raw materials and production process. The scope of conducted LCA may also vary from only focusing on production to including installation, use phase and end-of-life.

Interest towards environmental information about construction products is growing and transparency is wished from the manufacturers in terms of environmental impacts. EPD enables the manufacturers to communicate about the environmental impacts of their products based on externally verified environmental information and LCA. The information reported in an EPD can be uploaded to RT-database, which promotes the sharing and utilization of environmental data in construction projects.
