Sweco continues with Turku light rail project
May 19, 2026
The Turku City Council has decided on the construction of a tramway in Turku. According to the decision, the Turku Tramway Alliance will implement a tramway of approximately 12 kilometres from the port via the city centre and Kupittaa to Varissuo. The decision is conditional on securing state funding in the upcoming MAL negotiations.
Turku City Council decided at its meeting on 18 May to commission the Turku Tramway Alliance to build a 12-kilometre tramway line from the Port of Turku to Varissuo via the city centre and Kupittaa. The decision is contingent on securing state funding in the upcoming negotiations on land use, housing and transport agreements. The railway project includes a comprehensive reconstruction of all streets along the route, meaning that, in addition to the tracks, the Alliance will build 12 kilometres of new bicycle lanes and pavements, green infrastructure and street landscaping, municipal utilities, and carry out subgrade stabilisation. Passenger traffic is expected to start in the early 2030s.
Sweco is involved in the Turku tramway project as one of the service providers in alliance. The responsibilities include, among other things, assessing the impact of planning on archaeological cultural heritage, as well as coordinating any required excavations and minimizing impacts in close cooperation with authorities and across different technical disciplines.
“The City Council’s decision clarifies the progress of the tramway project. We have been involved in the development phase and will continue the work as part of the alliance in the next phases”, says Juho Siipo, Division director, Infrastructure and Transportation at Sweco.
