Sweco selected as detailed design partner for Oulun Energia’s third electric boiler project
May 21, 2026
Oulun Energia has selected Sweco as the detailed design partner for its third electric boiler project in Oulu.
Sweco has been involved in the project since the preliminary design phase and has also supported Oulun Energia in the procurement of the boiler. The project is part of the ongoing transition of district heating and the development of heat production.
The third electric boiler is part of Oulun Energia’s broader investment in flexible and low‑emission heat production, where district heating is developed to utilise multiple production methods in parallel. An electrode boiler converts electricity into heat with high efficiency and operates as a flexible load in the electricity system. As electricity generation increasingly relies on renewable sources, electric boilers enable the utilisation of renewable electricity in district heating and help reduce the use of fossil fuels.
Sweco’s assignment covers the detailed design of the electric boiler project. The company has also contributed during the preliminary design phase and supported Oulun Energia in the boiler procurement process.
“We have carried out several similar projects with Oulun Energia, which has clarified roles and responsibilities. When procurement and interfaces between different engineering disciplines are defined in advance, project delivery can be managed more efficiently and according to schedule. Electric boilers are part of a broader development in which district heating is produced using multiple solutions in parallel,” says Lauri Pienipaavola, Project Manager, Sweco.
