Sweco selected as engineering partner for Kotka battery materials plant
30.6.2025
Easpring Finland New Materials is constructing a battery material plant in Kotka, which, upon completion, will produce 60,000 tons of cathode active material per year. Cathode active material is an essential raw material for lithium-ion batteries, which are used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems and many other applications. The production of battery materials plays a vital role in facilitating the green transition in both the transportation and energy sectors.
Easpring Finland has selected Sweco as the engineering partner for the construction project. Sweco will provide detailed engineering and expert services to build the new production plant in Kotka. Previously, Sweco prepared the environmental, chemical, and building permit applications and conducted FEL3-level basic engineering.
“Our partner, Sweco, is one of the world’s leading companies providing the design and engineering services for manufacturing industry, and we have been cooperating with them for a long time. With the Kotka CAM plant, we are creating an entirely new kind of industry in Finland related to the production of lithium-ion batteries. We have strong confidence in building a green and intelligent plant in Kotka with the help of Sweco’s experts”, says Jashon Guan, CEO of Easpring Finland New Materials.
“It’s great that our expertise in battery industry investments is trusted. Batteries are an essential component for the green transition, and this investment plays a significant role in building resilient battery value chain in Europe. The plant to be built in Kotka will produce valuable key material for batteries used in cars and energy storage systems. Previously, our experts prepared pre-engineering documentation to support the client’s investment decision and to prepare the necessary permit applications for regulatory assessment. Now, we are performing the detailed engineering for the construction phase”, says Tuomas Salminen, Director of Sweco’s Industry and Energy Division.
