Sweco selected as Väylävirasto’s service alliance partner
May 19, 2026
Sweco has been selected as part of the Väylävirasto (Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s) service alliance, whose task is to design the replacement of safety equipment and train control systems within the ERTMS programme. In addition, Sweco’s experts in the alliance are responsible for commissioning inspections.
The aim of Väylävirasto’s ERTMS programme is to replace the safety equipment and train control systems across Finland’s entire rail network in phases by 2040. The alliance now beginning its work is responsible for railway sections in Western and Southern Finland, with a total length of nearly 970 kilometres. These sections include, among others, the main line from Helsinki to Pohjois-Louko, almost reaching Seinäjoki, as well as the coastal line from Helsinki to Uusikaupunki.
Sweco’s experts are responsible for the design of replacing safety and train control systems, as well as commissioning inspections of the implementations.
“In the service alliance, we bring strong multidisciplinary expertise in railway design as well as experience from similar projects across Europe. We are pleased to contribute to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of Finland’s rail network also in the future,” says Juho Siipo, Division director, Infrastructure and Transportation at Sweco.
