Pudasjärvi city center development project

Land use planning controls the use and construction of areas. The aim of the design is to promote e.g. creating a safe, healthy and comfortable living and operating environment and access to services. The zoning projects in the city center of Pudasjärvi included a new school center, a change of residential area and a shopping center.

The design of the school center was a fast-paced process. Its goal is to implement a approximately 9500k-m2 school campus with a log structure to meet the learning environment requirements of the 2020s. The planning of the construction project started already in the autumn of 2012 before the start of the planning process. The school campus is implemented using a life cycle model.

Initially, there were several alternative locations for the school center. A nature and landscape survey as well as an inventory of the built environment, a flood survey and a soil survey were carried out for the comparable areas, as well as a calculation of the need for replacement of land masses and its costs. Based on this, a higher north shore was chosen as the construction site. The zoning was done in parallel with the building design. The structure of the school campus was transformed so that some of the premises could later be converted to other uses, such as service apartments. The cellular structure and massing were chosen as the basis for the campus design. The planning also expanded to the adjacent residential area of ​​St. Petersburg, which is in the school’s area of ​​influence. Sweco planned to compact the structure of the block area and renovate the street network in the residential area.

Projects in Pudasjärvi’s city center also included a plan for the development of a new store, which was drawn up in 2014. The project included plans for trade services and transport solutions. The development of the store will continue this year with the preparation of a change in the area reservation plan and town plan for transport solutions.
