The data-center in Kajaani

Transforming an old industrial property in Kajaani to a modern telecommunications centre was implemented in cooperation between Sweco architects and experts. In keeping with sustainable development, we believe that older buildings can also be transformed to new uses while respecting the surroundings and making them livelier.

Our close cooperation with the customer and our experts’ strong and versatile expertise ensured the best possible approach to implementing a challenging telecommunications centre.

We designed the transformation of an old UPM-Kymmene paper warehouse to a data centre that meets the needs of a modern server centre and high performance computing. The centre is now home to the IT Centre for Science CSC and Herman IT.

The CSC computers offer high performance computing to universities, among others. We have paid special attention to eco-friendliness in our design. The electricity used by the data centre is produced with hydroelectric power, and the waste heat from cooling is utilised for heating the incoming air in the offices.

Building a visual company image with the means of architecture was an integral part of this project. The nearly 200 metres long façade is divided into sections of corrugated steel in different colours. The use of CorTen steel in the new surface materials creates a connection to the colour scheme of the old red brick architecture in the area.
