VSME is a voluntary sustainability reporting model for SMEs
VSME Reporting for SMEs
A clear and cost‑efficient approach to voluntary sustainability reporting
VSME (Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for non‑listed SMEs) is a voluntary sustainability reporting framework recommended by the European Commission for small and medium‑sized enterprises. It provides SMEs with a clear and standardised way to collect, structure and present key sustainability information in a consistent and credible manner.
Compared to the scope and complexity of mandatory CSRD reporting, VSME offers a lighter and more flexible alternative – while still responding to stakeholder expectations and market requirements.
Even companies outside the scope of mandatory sustainability reporting increasingly need to provide structured sustainability data to customers, financiers and business partners. VSME supports this need in a pragmatic and proportionate way.
Who is VSME suitable for?
The VSME standard was originally developed for non‑listed SMEs, typically organisations with fewer than 250 employees. Following recent regulatory developments, VSME reporting can also be applied by mid‑sized companies (250–1,000 employees) that fall outside the scope of mandatory CSRD reporting.
VSME Basic
- Intended primarily for micro‑enterprises with 1–10 employees
- Covers a minimum set of sustainability disclosures
- A light and accessible starting point for sustainability reporting
VSME Comprehensive
The comprehensive level provides a broader and more coherent sustainability profile and is generally recommended when responding to market and stakeholder expectations. It includes more extensive disclosures, for example on:
- climate‑related risks
- human rights policies and practices
- diversity of governing bodies

Benefits of VSME reporting
A clear response to stakeholder information requests
A well‑prepared VSME report enables SMEs to respond efficiently and credibly to sustainability data requests from large companies, investors and customers.
Structured insight into sustainability risks and impacts
The VSME reporting process helps identify key sustainability risks, dependencies and impacts that are relevant to the business and its long‑term resilience.
Efficiency and cost savings in data management
Well‑defined materiality, data collection processes and information management save time and resources and help avoid operational inefficiencies over time.
A stronger competitive position
Companies that can provide clear, comparable and reliable sustainability data stand out in markets where decision‑making increasingly depends on trusted sustainability information.
Support for strategic development
VSME reporting is not just about disclosure. It provides a foundation for building sustainability strategy, continuous development and informed decision‑making
How VSME reporting works – Sweco’s four‑step approach
Sweco supports companies throughout the entire VSME reporting process with a structured and practical approach.
1. Identifying relevant data points
We review all VSME data points by theme and determine which disclosures are relevant for your company and its operations.
2. Gap analysis of existing data
We assess your current sustainability data and reporting practices against the VSME requirements and identify any missing information.
3. Developing the VSME report content
We create the report structure, table of contents, narratives, tables and visual elements in a clear and accessible format.
4. Finalising and publishing the VSME report
We support layout, visualisation and, where needed, publication of the report across appropriate channels.
Note: A double materiality assessment is not mandatory under VSME, but conducting one can help focus reporting on the most relevant sustainability topics and support strategic decision‑making.
