Helen chose Sweco as EPCM partner for implementing Helsinki’s first green hydrogen production plant

Published on 3rd July .2024

The energy company Helen has made the investment decision to implement a hydrogen production plant in Vuosaari. This project is Helen’s first hydrogen project and simultaneously the first hydrogen production plant to be built in Helsinki. Sweco will comprehensively manage the implementation phases of the production plant as the EPCM partner.

The pilot plant, named 3H2 Helsinki Hydrogen Hub, will have a capacity of about three megawatts, with the goal of starting production in 2026. The primary use of the produced hydrogen will be for heavy transportation. The waste heat from hydrogen production will be utilized in Helen’s district heating network, increasing the plant’s energy efficiency.
As the EPCM partner, Sweco is responsible for the design related to the project’s area infrastructure, including architecture, structural engineering, and plant design, as well as project management, procurement, and site management services. The electrolyzer intended for hydrogen production and related equipment will be designed, supplied, and installed by a different partner.

Sweco has also served as Helen’s EPCM partner in the Eiranranta and Salmisaari heat pump plant projects.

“The 3H2 project is the first of its kind in the world, combining four different sectors: electricity, transportation, heating, and hydrogen, as well as flexibility between them. For Helen, hydrogen is an essential part of our new strategy, and we are committed to investing in the development of the hydrogen business. It is wonderful to continue the well-functioning cooperation with Sweco by building Helsinki’s first green hydrogen production plant together,” says Helen’s Director responsible for new businesses and hydrogen Sari Mannonen

We are very pleased that our expertise is trusted in hydrogen matters thanks to previous common EPCM projects, and we can continue the well-functioning cooperation with Helen. Our joint refined operating methods and Sweco’s experience from previous hydrogen projects also contribute to the implementation of the 3H2 project. It is wonderful to continue together towards achieving Helen’s carbon neutrality goals“, Sweco’s  Director, Industry and Energy sector, Tuomas Salminen rejoices.
