The renovation of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium is nearing the finish line, and the spectacular functionalist building will be reopened in late summer 2020. Now, we are celebrating the remodelled stadium as the winner of the Steel Structure of the Year 2019 award. Sweco’s designers handled the massive renovation undertaking of the culturally and historically significant sports venue, including structural renovation engineering and structural design. Read more

Ranua’s LEED-certified wellness centre promotes health in a natural way

For almost a year, residents of Ranua have been enjoying the healthy and safe premises of their new wellness centre. Sweco’s designers handled the HVAC, electrical, telecommunication and safety design of the site that has been granted the LEED Gold environmental certificate. Read more

Largest wooden school in Finland implemented sustainability with a life cycle model

The new wooden Mansikkala School in Imatra will be built in the middle of the school campus by the Vuoksi River. The project will be carried out by YIT using a life cycle model, and the components for the wooden frame will be supplied by Oiva Wood Solutions. Sweco handled the preliminary design, element design and main structural design of the structures for the largest wooden school building in Finland. Read more

International Sweco team to take part in completely drawing-free bridge project in Norway

City of Helsinki analysed the costs and carbon footprint of renovation and new constuction

Many Finnish cities are working to increase the efficiency of land use and condense the urban structure by means of complementary construction, tearing down old buildings and constructing new ones. The City of Helsinki wanted to determine the construction costs and emissions of two different methods: renovation and heightening versus dismantling and construction. Sweco conducted the cost analysis and carbon footprint calculation for two residential blocks of flats. Read more

Expansion of Santa’s very own airport in Rovaniemi to be completed for the winter season

The expansion ofthe Rovaniemi Airport terminal facilities is part of Finavia’s programme focused on developing airports in Lapland. The number of air passengers in the airports of Lapland is estimated to increase from 1.3 million to 2 million over the coming decade.
