Hydrogen network engineering and consulting services from Sweco
Hydrogen network engineering and consulting
Sweco offers consulting and design services for hydrogen network route assessments, environmental impact assessments and permitting, as well as the technical design of hydrogen networks and pipelines and construction management in Finland, the Baltic Sea region and Europe-wide hydrogen infrastructure projects. Our experienced experts are familiar with the hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea region, and we also provide support for feasibility studies, investment and financing studies, and due diligence consulting.
Our clients include municipalities, industrial companies, energy companies and hydrogen infrastructure development companies.
New hydrogen networks are needed in Finland and Europe
The energy transition and the electrification of society are increasing the need for hydrogen networks in Finland and Europe. In addition to industrial and transport solutions, hydrogen production and hydrogen networks are part of the energy market of the future: efficient transmission and storage of renewable energy in hydrogen pipelines.
The advantage of hydrogen networks in energy transmission and storage is that the land use requirement of hydrogen pipelines is lower than that of electricity transmission lines. The energy content of one hydrogen pipeline corresponds to approximately 14 transmission lines (400 kV).
Partner for hydrogen network builders and developers
Sweco assists in hydrogen network projects from feasibility studies to implementation planning. We have strong experience in expert tasks related to the engineering and environmental impact assessment of Finland’s national hydrogen network. The Finnish gas network operator Gasgrid has selected Sweco as its framework agreement partner in the technical design of hydrogen infrastructure and environmental consulting related to the EIA process. During the 2030s, Gasgrid Finland will build a hydrogen pipeline in stages from Tornio to Southern Finland.
We help hydrogen network builders and developers in the route reviews and technical design of regional, national and pan-European hydrogen pipelines and networks. We also serve municipalities, industry and hydrogen infrastructure development companies in the planning and construction of local and regional hydrogen pipelines around the hydrogen main grid. Regional hydrogen transmission and distribution networks create an ecosystem between hydrogen producers and users.

International expertise in the hydrogen network engineering
In the design of hydrogen networks, we utilise the Sweco Group’s extensive experience in hydrogen network projects under construction in the Netherlands and Belgium, for example. We can be responsible for the implementation of the hydrogen pipeline as a whole, from permitting to design, construction and supervision.
An essential part of the technical design of hydrogen networks is map-based route reviews. We model the routes of hydrogen pipelines based on public geospatial datasets, which helps to avoid areas where hydrogen pipelines are difficult to implement due to land ownership or natural values.
