Electricity network and transmission line engineering and consulting

Sweco plans and consults on electricity network, transmission line and substation projects from the main grid to distribution networks. We serve electricity network companies, renewable electricity producers, energy-intensive industries and other large consumers of electricity in the development, renovation and improvement of operational reliability of the electricity network.

Sweco employs more than 2,000 experts in the electricity transmission grid, transmission lines and substations.

A reliable electricity network supports the energy transition and the electrification of industry

The rapid electrification of society and the green transition require the expansion of the electricity grid and transmission capacity in Finland, the Nordic countries and Europe. Equally important is the renovation and maintenance of the existing electricity grid, which improves energy resilience.

The transfer of overhead lines to underground cables increases the operational reliability of the electricity network and protects critical electrical infrastructure. A strong electricity network is an important attraction factor for residents, businesses and energy-intensive industries.

Expert in electricity networks, transmission lines and substations for network companies, energy producers and industry

Sweco offers more than 2,000 specialists for the design of electricity networks, transmission lines and substations in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Central Europe. In addition to design services, we have extensive experience in electricity network condition inspections, environmental impact assessments (EIAs), environmental permit processes and asset management.

Sweco is a framework agreement partner of Fingrid, Finland’s transmission system operator, in the extensive electricity grid development plan (2026–2035). The aim is to improve the security of electricity supply and the transmission of renewable electrical energy by approximately 10 gigawatts, as well as to support the electrification of industry.

We are also closely involved in the electricity network, transmission line and substation projects of our framework agreement partners Caruna and Elenia, as well as smaller regional electricity network companies.

In addition, we flexibly serve large producers and consumers of renewable electricity, from wind and solar power plants to data centres and hydrogen plants. We design reliable electricity connections and transmission connections for all kinds of industries, for example for electric boilers in district heating networks.

Our critical power infrastructure design, consulting and construction services cover transmission lines and distribution networks (0.4–400 kV), overhead and underground cables, marine and waterway cables, substations and cable relocations.

Frequently asked questions about electricity network and transmission line projects

Electricity network engineering means, for example, the technical design of transmission lines, distribution networks, substations, cabling and transmission connections, as well as expert consulting related to the permitting, environmental impacts and implementation of the project.

Sweco designs electricity network, transmission line and substation projects from the main grid to distribution networks, as well as for the needs of renewable energy production, industry and critical energy infrastructure.

An electricity network expert is needed, for example, when the network is expanded, renovated or its transmission capacity is increased. Expert support is also needed in connecting renewable energy production to the electricity grid, in the design of substations and transmission lines, in grid connection studies, permit processes, environmental impact assessments, and in the development of the operational reliability and maintenance of the electricity network.

A reliable electricity network supports the electrification of society, the transmission of renewable energy, industrial investments and the resilience of critical infrastructure.
